‘I gave myself permission to care, because there are a lot of people in this world who are afraid of caring, who are afraid of showing they care because it’s uncool. It’s uncool to have passion. It’s so much easier to lose when you’ve shown everyone how much you don’t care if you win or lose. It’s much harder to lose when you show that you care, but you;ll never win unless you also stand to lose. I’ve said it before. Don’t be afraid of your passion, give it free reign, and be honest and work hard and it will all turn out just fine.’

I turned twenty something plus one this week. It seems to come around quicker every year.

I spent my birthday at work where I kept the special day quiet from my colleagues. I have never been one to make a big deal out of my birthday so to keep it a secret at work was sort of nice. I went out for a simple dinner at Chaophraya with a beautiful rooftop view of Edinburgh Castle, before going home to sleep for work the next day.

I find that as I have gotten older the birthday festivities have been toned down greatly. I am perfectly satisfied with a smaller, quieter birthday celebration rather than a big affair. Each year I get more and more thankful for the things that I have achieved and received within the past year. The more years I live; the more I have to be thankful for.

‘People don’t want things to make sense. Know why? Because if they did we’d all be in trouble. You drive too fast down the street because it feels good or you’re in a hurry. If things made sense, a cop would stop you every single time and give you a ticket. But what happens when a cop *does* stop you? You get angry and say that’s not fair! But sure it’s fair. It also makes sense. If life made sense we’d either behave ourselves a hell of a lot better or be walking around scared, waiting for the punishment due us for all the bad things we do every day. We want life to make sense only when it’s to our advantage. Otherwise, it’s interesting not knowing what’s coming next. Maybe you’ll get heads, maybe tails. People do wrong things all the time and get away with it. Good people get their neck broken. Would you prefer it if only the good people got rewarded? How often are you good? How often do you deserve the good *you* get? Wouldn’t you rather have an interesting life than a fair one?’

I recently attended my graduation ceremony!

To finally round off my 4 years of studying in university with a celebration with my classmates, and other fellow university students, was a great and joyous occasion. It felt really good to put on the graduation gown and hood, and to walk around knowing it was an important day for all the people surrounding me.

It was also the university Chancellor’s last graduation ceremony after serving for many years. He gave a moving speech to the 2015 graduates and reiterated many times for us not to waste our lives.

Now that I have officially left the student sphere and entered into working life, I feel a little older and a little wiser. Onwards and upwards!

Sleep is something I really took for granted in my university days. I often had days off and would sleep past noon and spend lazy days in the house. Now that I have to wake up early every morning to go to work I have learnt to savour the precious hours of sleep.

Every night I wind down in bed by checking my social media and soon I find my eyes closing of their own accord. By 11pm I am normally very ready to sleep; sometimes even before this time. Sleep early and rise early!

Working life has surely taken its toll on my student body but I can feel productivity and alertness spreading too. One day at a time!
