‘I crave space. It charges my batteries. It helps me breathe. Being around people can be so exhausting, because most of them love to take and barely know how to give. Except for a rare few.’

‘When you feel perpetually unmotivated, you start questioning your existence in an unhealthy way; everything becomes a pseudo intellectual question you have no interest in responding whatsoever. This whole process becomes your very skin and it does not merely affect you; it actually defines you. So, you see yourself as a shadowy figure unworthy of developing interest, unworthy of wondering about the world – profoundly unworthy in every sense and deeply absent in your very presence.’

Ingmar Bergman

‘Think about it for a minute – I mean this seriously. In your whole life right up until today, how many people have really understood you? You, the whole package, not just the separate pieces – the vision, the humor, the dreams, the insight… Your own special way of interacting with the daily world… I believe if we’re lucky there will be only a few people in our lifetime who understand us and our choices. But more importantly they will appreciate the way we’ve brought our knowledge and experiences together and cooked them up into who we are.’

‘Feel it, understand it, overcome it.’

William Chapman

As a person trying to come to terms with an unfortunate change in circumstances, this quote really spoke to me. Wallowing in my own feelings will never make something go away, and no amount of ‘putting my life on hold’ will be enough. I have come to understand my situation and to take measures in overcoming it. I hope that whatever troubles I face can be accepted for what they are, for that is the first step on the road to recovery.

‘One of the risks of being quiet is that other people can fill your silence with their own interpretation: You’re bored. You’re depressed. You’re shy. You’re stuck up. You’re judgmental. When others can’t read us, they write their own story – not always one we choose or that’s true to who we are.’

‘We – now more than ever, it seems – have a profound civilizational anxiety about being alone. And the seed for it is increasingly planted in childhood – in an age when play is increasingly equated with screens and interfaces, being alone with a screen is not quite being alone at all, so the art of taking joy in one’s own company slips further and further out of reach.’

Robert Paul Smith – How To Do Nothing With Nobody All Alone By Yourself

Solitude is underrated. Sometimes the best company is your own thoughts, your own imagination, and your own creativity. In an age of increasing technology and the rise of a generation addicted to it, taking joy in one’s own company is now seldom recognised.

‘You crave the deepest connections with others, but you don’t trust to let anyone in.’

Anonymous

Trust has always been a big issue for me. Whether it be putting too much trust in someone or hiding away and not trusting enough, the balance is hard to get right. Finding those that respect your decisions and that you can confide in can be difficult. Trust is about give and take, which is why I seek to be a trustworthy person so I too can put my trust in others.
